More about Aberdeen

Over the centuries, Aberdeen has profited from a variety of industries: agriculture, fishing, textiles, shipbuilding, paper making, granite and, since the 1960s, oil and gas. It is known as The Granite City and the stone from its Rubislaw quarry was used to build the terraces of the Houses of Parliament, Waterloo Bridge in London and most of the city itself. With the North Sea discoveries of the late twentieth century, it became the oil capital of Europe, boasting the second largest heliport in the world.

The city has two universities and three world-famous research institutes – in fishing, agricultural and soil research, and food and nutrition. There is also a dynamic and fast growing electronics design and development industry and considerable interest in the development ofnew energy sources. The transfer of technology from oil to other industries may well help to change its name from the oil capital to the energy capital of Europe.
