Its name comes from the Gaelic Beannchar, meaning ‘blessed place'. It is the largest town in the area and sits at the junction of the rivers Dee and Feugh. The Bridge of Feugh is a popular place from which to watch salmon leap as they migrate to spawn in the upper reaches of the Dee.
The oil boom’s effects are clear to see in the way the
town has grown since the 1970's, an expansion that’s increased even more rapidly since 2001.
Banchory is the gateway to Royal Deeside and a magnet for tourists. It
is surrounded by beautiful countryside and attractive hills. Nearby are
the famous
castles of Crathes and Drum, both run by the National Trust for Scotland.
