There were economic and military settlements on this peninsula on the southwest coast of Norway as far back as the 800s-900s but Stavanger itself was established as a municipality on January 1st, 1838. Over the years, its most important industries were shipping, shipbuilding, the canning industry and associated subcontractors. Then, in 1969, everything changed with the discovery of North Sea oil.
After much discussion, Stavanger, with its good harbour and plane connections, was chosen to be the onshore centre for the Norwegian sector, and the town grew very quickly.
During the mid 1970s, the increasing importance of petroleum exploration and production caused a complete change in the business and cultural climate.
